About:
Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility similar to Symantec's Ghost. This
uility saves partitions in the EXT2, Reiserfs, NTFS, HPFS, FAT16, and FAT32
file system formats to an image file. The image file can be compressed with
gzip or bzip2 in order to save disk space, and it can be split in order to fit
onto a series of floppy disks. This program can be useful for backup purposes.
A boot/root disk is also provided, allowing you to run Partition Image without
Linux installed on the hard disk.

Fantastic
by scribbler - Jul 10th 2003 11:23:59
Partition Image is a fantastic free alternative to the commercial Norton
Ghost. Using the KNOPPIX live ISO, I was able to fully back up my Windows
hard drive (FAT32), purposely destroy it using deltree, and fully restore
it, without a single hitch from the program itself.
If I had to find a fault with the software, I'd have to say it's a little
slow backing up/restoring. But that, to be honest is probably not a fault
with the program. After all, it was a 2Gb FAT32 partition, and an hour
either way to backup/restore the compressed data is a lot easier than
having to install Windoze from scratch. The built-in functionality to
compress the backup files works like a charm, it compressed those 2Gb's
down to about 1.3Gb, easily enough space to fit onto CD.
It took an hour to back up a 10Gb ReiserFS partition on another machine
without any compression. And considering the age/speed of the machine, this
is totally adequate.
Overall, a fantastic program, and one I'm going to use a lot.

brilliant - beats ghost
by be - Apr 20th 2003 03:58:24
like a lot of people ive got at least one dual boot system, with a mix of
linux/ntfs partitions. ive also got an external usb drive. ghost couldnt
use it, this app let me create images of all my partitions in no time at
all directly to the usb drive.
it was just so easy to backup to the usb drive compared with ghost!!
but more importantly, it worked, i deleted a few files
on several partitions and it restored the partitions
effortlessly. i only came ´unstuck´ when i reduced the
size of one 6gb partition by 200mb, it wouldnt attempt to restore from the
image file.
installing the static rpm was a breeze, the gui didnt work
but the web page carries that warning, so after the first error with it, i
stopped bothering.
this is a damn good app and well worth the look for any home hacker or
technician who usually carries a copy of ghost in the tool kit.

It almost sounds too good to be true. I will have to check it out!
