Red Hat's IPO put them in a position to make waves in the Linux Community, and after discussing it in various forums and thinking long and hard about thier position, I have made some observations. I only hope to see them succeed for the sake of the open source community in general, but there are hard buisness facts to contend with as well. [Comments are disabled]
About: The LinuxClassLibrary is a growing set of classes which everyone needs every day, that runs on all types of *nix and also on Win32. Currently it is a library that works in the background (non GUI). Current features are character handling, file descriptors (sockets, file, etc.), a database system (like the Perl DBI), an event system, template collection classes (set, heap, hash, etc.), IPC, protocols, plug-ins, and images. Changes: Adeed Iterator for LHash, fixed bugs, and added ODBC driver for LDBSystem (Windows only currently).
About: GObject Builder (GOB) is a simple preprocessor for easily creating GObjects (glib objects). It reads a class description file with inline C code and produces .c and .h object files for you. It allows you to easily use most of the features of the GObject system and avoids typos by reducing the amount of code needed. In general, the amount of code is about the same as for OO languages such as Java or C++, but you still have to only use C and you get all the power of the GObject system. Changes: Changed "this" to "self" (still accepts "this" for compatibility), and added a check for duplicate symbols.
About: PerlSETI is a GUI front end for the SETI@home client which is programmed in Perl. It shows many stats and is also good for use over the internet (remote login) since it is fast. You can run a new client or just start the perl script and monitor an already running client. Changes: Frequency is now displayed in GHz and the total CPU time is now always updated by adding the current unit CPU time to it.
About: Boxes is a text filter that can draw any kind of box around its input text. Box design choices range from simple boxes to complex ASCII art. A box can also be removed and repaired, even if it has been badly damaged by editing of the text inside. Since the generated boxes may be open on any side, the program can also be used to create regional comments in any programming language. New box designs of all sorts can easily be added and shared by appending to a free format configuration file. In addition to being a command line tool, Boxes integrates well with any text editor that supports filters.
About: The Geek Code Generator will generate a geek code block for you by asking you a series of questions about yourself. The generated code can be pasted into your .sig or anywhere else you would like to display your geekiness. Changes: Added UNIX Type selection screen and fixed some typos.
About: pydf displays the amount of used and available space on your filesystems, just like df, but in colours. The output format is completely customizable. Changes: Restored original colour, added selection of file to get mount information from, workaround for (possible?) bug in RedHat 6.0 python interpreter.
About: syslog-ng is a syslogd replacement supporting IPv6 and capable of transferring log messages reliably using TCP and filtering the content of messages using regular expressions. It has several macros that allow users to dynamically create target directories and files or reformat messages. Changes: New program destination which allows sending log messages to the standard input of an arbitrary program as well as a couple of fixes.
About: ColdStore is a gigabyte-scale persistent object store which mmap()s objects into a file (for persistence), can allocate objects in a minimal working-set of pages (for speed), permits library versions to change without a rebuild of the store, permits application checkpoint/restart. ColdStore might be used to replace a database, cache highly structured objects, act as an OODB, make STL persistent, act as a Document Store for XML/SGML/HTML, create a MUD. Future projects include a virtual machine toolkit, ports of several languages, VM and byte-interpretive language workbench.
About: SoundTracker is a pattern-oriented music editor (similar to the DOS program 'FastTracker'). Samples are lined up on tracks and patterns which are then arranged to a song. Supported module formats are XM and MOD; the player code is the one from OpenCP. A basic sample recorder and editor is also included. Changes: Transposition and volume ramping dialogs, menu accelerators, japanese translation, and more.
About: Adaptive Server Enterprise, (formerly Sybase SQL Server), is optimized for OLTP and mixed workload environments, with unique features that allow it to adapt to the unpredictable requirements of the Internet. Adaptive Server Enterprise is specially designed for high data availability, while providing predictable, high performance with terrific scalability. The package includes the standard features of Adaptive Server Enterprise and all related connectivity components. Changes: The latest release introduces three types of row-level locking (RLL) models to ensure the widest range of versatility in application environments: Data Page Locking, Data Row Locking and All Page Locking.
About: tal aligns common characters at the ends of lines. This is especially useful for making long C macro definitions look nice or for repairing "broken" comment boxes. tal works on any kind of common ending, which it autodetects. Intended as, but not limited to being, a filter program ("plug-in") for text editors. Changes: Added auto-detection override and case sensitivity toggle, changed some default values which tended to confuse users.
About: The print_filter package contains a simple print filter which handles several file formats. Print_filter is designed to be as simple as possible, allowing one to easily modify or expand the source code. print_filter was originally written out of frustration with Red Hat's print filter, which is difficult to modify without using its GUI tools. print_filter is easy to work with on a console system. Changes: First release.
About: NetBSD is a free, secure, and highly portable Unix-like operating system available for many platforms, from large-scale server systems to powerful desktop systems to handheld and embedded devices. Its clean design and advanced features make it excellent in both production and research environments, and the source code is freely available under a business-friendly license. NetBSD is developed and supported by a large and vivid international community. Many applications are easily available through pkgsrc, the NetBSD Packages Collection.
About: code2html is a perlscript which converts a program source code to syntax highlighted HTML. It may be called from the command line or as a CGI script. It can also handle include commands in HTML files. Currently supports: Ada 95, C, C++, HTML, Java, JavaScript, Makefile, Pascal, Perl, SQL, AWK, M4, and Groff. Changes: Faster, uses less memory, anchors are not used any more when no line numbers are wanted, new option --title, other minor things.
About: DataManager is a library that provides a shared memory pool to allocate buffers from. It includes the necessary things to build servers which regulary produce data and provide them via ringbuffers to clients. It includes the common framework to have locking and various access methods. The use generally boils down to simple get()s and put()s. This project is no longer under active development. Changes: This is the first publically announced version.
About: Spruce is an X11 email client written in GTK+. It is geared towards being small and fast, supporting all the common features that users want or need without sacrificing usability or functionality. Changes: Memleak fixes, faster deletion of mails.
About: WebMail is a WWW mail application that allows users to manage IMAP or POP3 mailboxes via an easy-to-use WWW-interface. It may be used, for example, to give users access to their mailboxes from anywhere in the world. It is written in Java and should run at least on the most popular Unix platforms. WebMail can run on its own HTTP server (users just have to point their browser to the configured server and port) or can be run as a Java Servlet. On the clientside, only a frames-capable browser is needed, no Javascript or Java. Changes: Mainly bugfixes, IE5 works now, the charset bug has been removed, most of the strings are now sourced out to ease translation and the directory structure has been changed.
About: The Cacheability Engine will check a URL you feed it for several things that will affect a Web cache, including web server clock skew, expires and Cache-Control headers, Last-Modified date presence, validation of LM date, Content-Length presence and more. It makes it easy to see how a cache will treat your content. There are also public engines running, so you don't have to install the software to use it for Internet-available sites. Changes: Now works on Unix and Windows NT, support for use with a Netscape bookmarklet, many bugfixes, tweaks and code reorganisation.
About: The net-tools package contains a collection of programs that form the base set of the NET-3 networking distribution for the Linux operating system. It contains the important tools for controlling the network subsystem of the Linux kernel including arp, hostname, ifconfig, netstat, rarp and route. Changes: A bunch of buffer overrun vulnerabilities are fixed, Estonian translation, netstat recognizes ESP and GRE protocols and various other bugs have been fixed.
About: KWvDial is a full featured Intelligent PPP Dialer for KDE. It is still early in its development, but is however fully functional. Among its features are intuitive handling of multiple profiles, basic online timer, and a very mature connection engine. Changes: Bug Fixes, synchronized with the main WvDial Tree, and started to implement docking code which is still alpha quality.
About: SENSE is a highly portable, all software DSM system featuring high performance, normal variable semantics for accessing shared memory and interresting architectural features like a dynamic unic of coherence. Using SENSE you can utilize the power of several workstations. Changes: Made updatequeues expand dynamically. This simplifies configuration somewhat. Currently working on same for shared memory and hash table.
About: Arla is a free AFS client and server implementation. The main goal is to make a fully functional client with all capabilities of normal AFS. Other implemented things are all the normal management tools and a server. Changes: Better support for Solaris 7 in 64-bit mode, new transarc-compatible programs klog, unlog, and tokens, support for the getattr inode_operation on Linux, support for generating root.afs in the client (dynroot), more bugs related to deleting files fixed, uses the syscalls fhopen and getfh on NetBSD-current, more test cases and some more bug fixes.
About: Lynx is a fully-featured WWW client for users running cursor-addressable, character-cell display devices (e.g., vt100 terminals, terminal emulators running on PCs or Macs, or any other character-cell display). It will display HTML documents containing links to files on the local system, as well as files on remote systems running HTTP, HTTPS, gopher, FTP, WAIS, NNTP, finger, or cso/ph/qi servers, and services accessible via logins to telnet, tn3270, or rlogin accounts. Changes: Mostly compile-fixe and added a new configure option (--with-charsets).
About: Given a URL, Getleft will try to download all links. As it goes, it modifies the original HTML pages so that the absolute links get changed to relative links, and links to active pages get changed to the resulting pages. It supports thirteen different languages. Changes: Getleft now will, if interrupted, resume downloading a file. A couple more enhancements and bug fixes have been incorporated as well.
About: Pagecast submits lists of URLs to various search engines such as AltaVista, Infoseek, Excite, Google, etc. to be indexed. It can run from the command-line or as a mail-robot (email a list of URLs to pagecast@yourmachine). It has a few advanced features such as the ability to rate a URL's keyword-to-title relevance and fix broken meta tags. Changes: This is a maintenance release, probably the last before a major rewrite of many features for a 2.0 release. All underscores have been removed from Pagecast since some versions of Python have problems with underscores in config file variable names, added 3 new search engines, new documentation on how to add a search engine, and debugging command line option.
About: In X ARCHON, much like in the original ARCHON, the light side and the dark side fight over control of a chess-like board. Changes: A GTK+ based GUI has been implemented and you don't have to recompile if you want to change keys or flip sides or set the computer's skill level.
About: ZAngband is a single-player rogue-like dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems. Changes: Various bugfixes.
About: Randtype is a small utility to read either standard input or text files and display the output, character-by-character or line-by-line, at random intervals. The randomness can be refined on the command line. Changes: Added inverted --wait command line option of --no-wait.
About: SmartHTML is yet another HTML preprocessor. It allows you to write Web pages in a language more sane than HTML: paragraphs are automatically inserted when two consecutive newlines are encountered. Special symbols like < & etc. are automatically replaced. Tags look like texinfo: @tagname { contents }. Written in Perl, it allows tags to run Perl subroutines on the contents, allowing e.g. automatic generation of a table of contents, smarter generation of links, macros which can define HTML code which has to be maintained in only one place, etc. Changes: Macros can now take named arguments, bugs with .header/.footer files fixed.
About: J-Pilot is a full-featured desktop organizer application for the Palm Pilot that runs under Linux and UNIX. It includes support for Datebook, Contacts, Address, Memo, Memos, Todos, Expenses, and has plugin support. It uses the GTK+ libraries. Changes: Fixed the configure script for Solaris and Debian users, minor GUI changes/improvements, added an install screen.
About: The GIMP Imagemap plug-in enables The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to create clickable imagemaps in CSIM, CERN or NCSA format. Changes: Implementation of undo/redo functionality, user defineable image URL in settings dialog and a few bug fixes.
About: gPS (graphical Process Statistics) is a system information applet based on GTK+. It displays the processes of one or more computers (like ps or top), allows killing, renicing, and signal sending, shows lots of details on selected processes, shows CPU/Memory usage and history graphs, and is capable of watching networked computers in addition to the local one. It also provides an easy way to send signals to processes based on their owners (uid), groups (gid), and string matching. Changes: Fixed incompatibility with gtk+ 1.2.4.
About: sitecopy allows you to easily maintain remote Web sites. The program will upload files to the server which have changed locally, and delete files from the server which have been removed locally, keeping the remote site synchronized. FTP and WebDAV are supported. Changes: HTTP authentication code rewritten to comply with RFC2617, support for HTTP proxies, FTP transfer type is maintained across connection breaks, many bug fixes and portability improvements, console frontend has minor cosmetic changes, GNOME frontend has new quit and upload dialogs, improved error handling and WebDAV support.
About: acmemail is a multiuser IMAP/POP3 to Web gateway (or webmail program). It reads mail from a mail server and displays it using HTML on a web server. It is written in Perl, has full support for MIME (and mod_perl), is quite pretty, and is GPL'd or distributed under the Perl Artistic License. Changes: Added one line fix to remove the "regexp *+ operand could be empty" error.
About: mcl is a MUD client running in a Virtual Console under Linux or using standard TTY routines under any other UNIX. Embedded Perl or Python offer very high tweakability. Other features include huge scrollback, a stable input line with the MUD prompt, Perl regexps for actions and substitutions. Changes: Now supports Python as well as Perl for scripting, improved xterm key recognition, ZMUD-like speedwalks, better input line editing and various bug fixes.
About: The GlobeCom Jukebox is a music jukebox with integrated CDDB-aware ripping and groupware functionality. It is completely configurable from the Web interface, seamlessly integrates ripping from CD to encoded MP3, and supports grouping of songs, peak adjustment, account management for access, streaming of jukebox or single song, themability, album handling, and online help. Changes: Included alpha version of KDE client instead of web interface, automatic recording level detection for same output level and loads of bugfixes.
About: wmSMPmon is a Window Maker applet for monitoring the CPUs, memory, and swap of SMP systems. Changes: First public release.
