About: Sketch is a vector drawing program similar to CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. It is written almost completely in Python with some modules written in C, combining the flexibility and power of Python with the speed of C. Advanced features include gradient fills, clip masks, text along a path, blend groups, convert text to curves, and more. Changes: User-defined default properties for newly-drawn objects, and various other small improvements and bugfixes.
About: Pan is a newsreader which attempts to be pleasing to both new and experienced users. In addition to the standard newsreader features, Pan also supports yEnc, offline newsreading, article filtering, multiple connections, and more features for power users and alt.binaries fans. Changes: Fixes for bugs involved with replying to messages, keyboard bindings and switching layout modes, corrupt total/unread message counts, TCP code, zero-line message retrieval crashes, and memory leak fixes.
About: The Linux-Mobile-Guide (formerly called the Laptop-HOWTO) is a guide covering laptop, notebook, PDA, and mobile phone related Linux features, such as installation methods (via network interface, without CD/DVD drive, etc.), hardware features (PCMCIA, IrDA, Bluetooth, APM, ACPI, etc.), and configurations for different environments. Changes: Rewrites of the chapters about Cellular Phones, Pagers, Calculators, Digital Cameras, Wearable Computing, and Noise Reduction, and many minor changes.
About: x2vnc is an implementation of the VNC RFB protocol designed to control a machine running a VNC server in a dual-monitor situation. Its effect is to make the controlled machine's display function as if attached to the controlling machine, allowing the use of just one set of input devices on two or more machines. Changes: First release.
About: netcomics is a Perl script that can retrieve comic strips from the Web that are updated each day. It utilizes a modular set of Perl scripts that provide information on where to find each specific strip. It is most often run as a cron job, but also has a GUI that you can use to browse comics. Changes: A change of the default installation location for module files to /usr/share/netcomics, rc file capability, and removal of Goats for copyright issues. About: Qpopper is a widely used server for the POP3 protocol. It includes TLS/SSL support, very fast start-up times, and reduced I/O at session close. This server is fully compliant with RFCs 1939 and 2449, and supports Kerberos V4, if enabled. Changes: A fix for a buffer overflow in pop_auth.c, several compilation fixes, use of a new file popper/banner.h to add a custom banner and CAPA IMPLEMENTATION tag suffix, a patch to make use of HOMEDIRMAIL easier, and unconditional use of dot-locking (and flock).
About: PMFirewall is an Ipchains Firewall and Masquerading Configuration Utility for Linux. It is designed to allow a beginner to build a custom firewall with little or no ipchains experience. This firewall should work for most Workstations, Servers, and Dual NIC routers using either a dialup, DSL, Cable, or LAN setup. It is restrictive to outside attacks while still being as transparent as possible to those inside. Changes: A fix for a problem with pmfirewall starting before pcmcia ethernet cards were activated, causing the firewall not to activate, use of a reject flag instead of denal of IDENTD requests to fix timeouts problems for services that require an AUTH response, better DHCP compatibility for cable modem users, support for a DHCP server on the internal interface, a new pmfirewall.rules.local file to add your own rules, a new restart function, and a new startup option to ip-up.local for PPP (now PPP users won't have to restart pmfirewall each time they are assigned a new IP).
About: jwhois is an Internet Whois client that contains an extensible configuration file, which defines its operation. The client supports queries to foreign hosts, either through the RFC 954 - NICNAME/WHOIS protocol, the RFC 2167 - Referral Whois 1.5 protocol, or HTTP using an external browser. Upon execution, it searches through its configuration to find the most specific whois server to query. Depending upon the reply from that whois server, it can assume the query was successfull and display the result to the user, or optionally redirect the query to another server to find more specific information. Changes: A fix for a bug in the output which sometimes caused an extra two bytes to be printed, and a fix for the included example configuration file to work with Internic's new output from whois.internic.net.
About: Sudo (su "do") allows a system administrator to give certain users (or groups of users) the ability to run some (or all) commands as root while logging all commands and arguments. Sudo operates on a per-command basis, it is not a replacement for the shell. Changes: Better run-time configurability, long password support, a fully functional '!' operator, and new modular authentication API.
About: Spice Opus is a mixed mode simulator compatible with Berkeley SPICE (2,3) and Georgia Tech's XSPICE with built-in optimization utilities. Users can write their own models in C, compile them, and load them into the simulator at runtime. The frontend and plot were rewritten for and statically linked with TrollTech's Qt 2.01 library. Changes: Initial announcement.
About: Survey is a nearly complete list of your system's configuration files. It also lists installed packages, hardware info, dmesg output, etc. The resulting printout is 25-50 pages in size, fully documenting your system. Survey is invaluable after a blown install or upgrade when it is too late to get this information. Large organizations could use survey to document every Linux system. Changes: Initial announcement.
About: JEsd is a reimplementation of EsounD in pure Java. Changes: Initial release.
About: RabbIt is a mutating, caching Web proxy used to speed up surfing over slow links like modems. It does this by removing advertising and background images and scaling down images to low quality JPEGs. RabbIT is written in Java and should be able to run on any platform. It does depend upon an image converter if image scaleing is on. The recommended image converter is "convert" from the ImageMagick package. Changes: A few fixes for old HTTP/0.9 request mode, a new DontFilter Filter that doesn't filter pages that will break the HTMLparser, a new BlinkFilter that removes blink and /blink tags, more documentation, and gzipping of text/html data that saves quite a bit of the data sent.
About: renameit is an MP3 filename standardizer. It formats your MP3 filenames based on the ID3 tag info, removes embedded spaces, and notifies you when an MP3 has no ID3 tag. Changes: Bugfixes for the batch scripts.
About: LZO is a portable lossless data compression library written in ANSI C. It offers pretty fast compression and very fast decompression. Decompression requires no memory. In addition there are slower compression levels achieving a quite competitive compression ratio while still decompressing at this very high speed. Changes: Updates to the configure system to fix the shared-library build problems that were reported on some platforms.
About: AccuRev is a fast, powerful, and easy-to-use Software Configuration Management (SCM) tool with integrated issue tracking based on "Streams" that more efficiently manages complex parallel and global development. Streams are a combination and superset of branches and labels that are first class objects instead of being file-by-file attributes. AccuRev records all merges and patches, so you never have to re-merge the same code. It supports file and directory renaming and merging, follows a client/server model, and is transaction-based. It includes an integrated graphical 3-way diff and merge tool. AccuRev provides an Open API (and SDK) to integrate with any third-party development tool (IBM/Rational ClearQuest, Serena TeamTrack, and more out of the box). It also integrates with Eclipse, the MS SCC API (MS Visual Studio), Sun Java Studio, any diff/merge tool with a command line interface, and more. Changes: Use of new 3-way merge features of TkDiff 3.05, and a version browser.
About: Autosig is a small utility for generating .signature files for email and .plan files for finger. The file is generated from a quote randomly selected from a file of quotes and a header file. The header file and the randomly selected quote are combined to form the signature file or plan file. It can be run as a frontend to your favorite mail client, or as a daemon. Changes: Initial release.
About: Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, well-documented remote-mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over on-demand TCP/IP links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It supports every remote-mail protocol now in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3, RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all flavors of IMAP, and ESMTP ETRN, ODMR, SMTP, LMTP, and local delivery agents.
About: ency reads the data file(s) from the Star Trek encyclopedias & episode guides CD-ROM and outputs search results as text or HTML. It also includes a library for writing your own software. Changes: A fix for a massive memory leak.
About: tkdiff is a graphical diff and merge tool that runs under Unix and Windows. Changes: New 3-way diff and merging capabilities, new tabstops, and full support for the AccuRev source control tool in addition to the existing support for CVS, Perforce, PVCS, RCS, and SCCS.
About: The goal of bug-buddy is to make reporting bugs very simple and easy for the user, while making the reports themselves more useful and informative for the developer. Changes: Support for dpkg to determine the version of components on Debian systems, and small UI improvements.
About: BLADE is a Web-based environment similar in nature to Zope, Mason, and Midgard. What distinguishes BLADE is its underlying technology, CORBA, which permits BLADE to function with and support any programming language. Further, BLADE supports object embedding from any language into any Web page, and as such is the first enviournment to allow the embedding and communication of Perl, Python, and C objects within the same page. Changes: An incomplete User Manager and Session objects; BLADE should still function without them for most things.
About: TinyMARE (Multi-user Adventure Roleplaying Epic) is a text-based MUD server completely rewritten for efficiency using TinyMUSH and TinyMUSE as a basis for its game engine. The server is designed for creating an extensive, novelistic role-playing atmosphere supporting real-time combat, day & night, seasons, and global weather. Using a telnet client, players can log on to explore a virtual world, find magical items, learn skills and techniques, and group together to surpass obstacles you create in your own epic adventure. Changes: Bugfixes for 2 DoS problems and new features, and support for Windows 95/98/NT as a binary release or compilation via Cygwin32.
About: Coyote Linux is a mini distribution designed for setting up network utility services such as Internet connection sharing, firewalling, or wireless access points. The goal is to make it as quick and easy as possible to set up a Linux system with only a minimal amount of Linux knowledge. Changes: A couple of major bugfixes in the various scripts that are used by Coyote.
About: Common C++ is a highly portable C++ class library meant primarily for the development of portable threaded applications. Support is provided both for POSIX platforms and native builds under Win32. The goal is to provide a truly common C++ framework for writing portable threaded applications that do not require a huge amount of runtime overhead to support, and hence can make C++ and threads suitable even for the development of trivial servers and applications. Changes: New UDPSimplex and UDPDuplex classes for peer-to-peer UDP media streaming.
About: Slirp is a (C)SLIP/PPP emulator based on the original BSD sources. It allows the user to pull up a full internet connection over a shell connection, and features sharing multiple modems for additional bandwidth.
About: August is a free html editor for the UNIX platform. It is a non- wysiwyg editor, like Aswedit or Hotdog, and is written with the Tcl/TK scripting language and graphical toolkit. Changes: An improved search and replace, with capabilities for searching in all open files, replaceing all without prompting, and searching from cursor, a new "Save all files" command in the "File" menu, a new command-line option "-all", which will load all *.html, *.htm, *.css and *.txt files in the current directory, changing of font and font size in the editor in the "August options" dialog, options of "None", "Word" or "Char" for the editor line wrap delimiter in the "August options" dialog, an improved status bar, a new vertical button bar, and bugfixes.
About: farsh is a utility to simplify shell script creation. For example, farsh can replace all #!/usr/bin/perl lines with #!/bin/farsh perl so they never have to be changed again. Changes: farsh will now add all environment variables defined in ~/.farsh.env to the environment before exec.
About: gif2png is a simple command-line utility to convert images from GIF to PNG format. It automatically preserves transparency, interlacing and text comments, and it can do multiple images in one command (e.g., gif2png *.gif). The distribution also includes a web2png script that can be used to convert an entire web tree; it calls gif2png to do image conversions, then patches IMG SRC tags correctly in referring pages. Changes: A new -g option to generate a gamma chunk, and -O now sets the highest level of image compression in the output, trading more conversion time for a smaller result.
About: LingoTeach is a language teaching program and library that use a session-based concept to teach languages from definable lesson files. It currently supports more than 16 languages, and sounds of native speakers for English, Spanish, and German exist. Changes: Swappable languages, Finnish and Polish localisations, and new Swedish, Finnish and Polish classes.
About: WPP is a small perl5 script that allows preprocessing of HTML files. It allows you to define "variables", which are brief abbreviations for longer constructs, and include common HTML fragments. It's useful for giving a uniform layout to different HTML pages. It can be used in cgi-bin programs for automatic generation of pages. With less HTML code inside you can make more flexible cgi-scripts. Changes: Fixes for a macro argument expansion bug inside the IF test and a serious bug in nested macro expansion (now the macro arguments prefix used internally by wpp is randomized), new built-in macros FILE_SIZE, FILE_DATE, and SYSTEM, a customizable DATE format through the DATE_FORMAT variable, and the output file was stripped of leading spaces and empty lines.
About: Gnometoaster is a full CD creation suite for X11 and GNOME. It can be used to copy and create data, audio, and mixed mode CDs on the fly or with precaching in both TAO and DAO mode. Data tracks can easily be created with the built-in file manager. GNOME drag-and-drop is supported throughout the program. Gnometoaster can also write MP3 files on the fly, is fully multisession capable, and can be used to encode all sorts of filetypes directly from audio audio tracks on a CD. Changes: A fix for a bug where one would only see a gray window at startup, new Norwegian, Japanese, Finnish, and French translations, and alphabetical sorting of file lists.
