In today's editorial, Bruce Smith takes a "What have you done for me lately?" look at Open Source development, and shares his concern over the answer he finds. [Comments are disabled]
About: This is the University of Washington's IMAP source distribution, which includes the IMAP4rev1 server, as well as a POP server that, in addition to offering the normal POP service, can relay commands to an IMAP server, thus permitting existing POP clients to access an IMAP server.
About: POP3-Checker is a POP3 email interface for the Web, written in PHP. It contacts the POP3 server via network sockets. Changes: Ability to specify the mailserver via the login-form, and fixes for mailbox and ten-mail-max bugs.
About: EasyTAG is a utility for viewing and editing tags for MP3, MP2, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Speex, MP4/AAC, MusePack, Monkey's Audio, and WavPack files. It features a simple and attractive GTK+ interface. Changes: Rewriting the tag only if it was modified, a fix for a stupid bug that imposed the current year on the entry when this one was empty and lost focus, a config file (to save default path to mp3, etc.), and an options window.
About: gnomemm (previously Gnome--) is a set of C++ bindings for the GNOME libraries, for use with gtkmm. It includes libgnomemm, gconfmm, libglademm, libgnomecanvasmm, and libgnomeuimm. Changes: First development release since being split from the Gtk-- distribution; changes to App and UIInfo wrappers.
About: Z80-ASM is a compiler for the Z80 CPU assembler and interactive terminal debugger. Changes: Initial release.
About: Brutalcopy transmits a file using UDP connection at a preprogrammed fixed data rate without flow control and with packet retransmission. It is not affected by packet loss and is intended for use on lines where TCP screws up due to high data loss. Changes: Initial release.
About: AniTMT is a software package which is used to create photorealistic films with your PC. It has a new script language to do this. As the raytracing process takes much time, it can be distributed in networks. Changes: This release adds Bezier functions, BeOS support, and a new homepage with an example.
About: Cannon Smash is a 3D table-tennis game. This game represents various strategies of tabletennis on the computer. Changes: This release fixes some bugs and changes the player parameter.
About: mnoGoSearch is a full-featured Web search engine that you can use to build search engines over HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and NTTP servers, local files, and database text fields. It supports many database systems as backends. It has built-in support for XML, HTML, and text, and external converters can be used to support other document types. An automatic language/charset guesser for more 70 language/charset combinations is included, along with cluster support, making it possible to distribute data over multiple computers and index huge collections with up to several hundred million documents. Changes: Several bugs in the 3.0.13 and 3.0.14 versions have been fixed.
About: Streamripper records MP3, Ogg, AAC, and NSV audio and video files from Shoutcast and Icecast compatible streams. The streams can be recorded as a whole or in individual tracks. Streamripper also features a relay stream, which lets you listen or watch live from multiple clients while recording. Changes: A few lines have been changed, and this release compiles under BeOS.

About: Gaby is a small personal database manager using GTK+ and GNOME (if available) for its GUI. It was designed to provide straight-forward access to the types of databases a casual user would normally use, while keeping the ability to easily create databases for other needs. It was designed with extensibility in mind and relies heavily on plug-ins. Changes: This release fixes a Makefile problem that prevented Gaby from building correctly.
About: MultiMail is an offline mail packet reader for many systems, using a curses-based interface. It supports the Blue Wave, QWK, OMEN, SOUP, and OPX formats.
About: ScanErrLog is a Python module that allows you to parse Apache error_log files and present their data in decreasing order of occurences of error messages. This is particularly useful if you want to quickly solve the most annoying problems Web visitors encounter on your site. You can use it directly from the command line, import it into another Python program and use the classes it defines, or use it as a CGI script. You can produce reports in HTML, PDF, XML, or Plain Text formats. Changes: ScanErrLog now accepts arguments on the command line. The most important ones are -c | --cumulate to cumulate results for all the files and -p | --pattern regexp to select the lines to parse using this particular regexp. The default pattern to select lines was modified because it was "not so common".
About: ColdSync is a portable synchronization tool for Palm devices (PalmPilot, Handspring Visor, etc.) that runs under *BSD, Solaris, Digital Unix/Tru64, Linux, AIX, and Windows NT. It supports PalmOS 2.0 (original PalmPilot) and later. It is only known to support Visor syncing under FreeBSD and Linux, however. It supports IR syncing under Linux. ColdSync can back up, restore, install, and synchronize database, and can be extended and customized through the use of conduits. ColdSync is rather paranoid and takes pains not to delete anything it isn't 100% sure about. Changes: More flexible conduit configuration. Conduits can take user-supplied configuration arguments. Several new conduits added.
About: CoreLinux++ is an initiative to normalize methods and conventions for OOA/OOD/C++ development for Linux, materialized in a set of Open Source C++ class libraries to support common patterns and frameworks and exploit the C++ standards. Changes: Added Mediator and Memento pattern implementations to source, analysis and design UML to documentation, updated the class references and fixed a minor bug with configure.in.
About: Siag Office is a free office package which consists of the spreadsheet Siag, the word processor PW, the animation program Egon, the text editor XedPlus, the file manager Xfiler and the previewer Gvu. Siag is easy to use, yet infinitely flexible through multiple embedded interpreters and a plugin mechanism that allows other programs to run inside the main document. The supported interpreters are SIOD, Guile, Tcl, and Python. Changes: Zoom display from 10% to 1000%. Colour printing. Many changes to the Richtext widget used by PW. Bugfix in C expression parser. New modes for grid lines. Images are displayed more efficiently.
About: UDPCast allows to send data simultaneously to many destinations on a local net. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of PCs at once. The advantage over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is that udpcast uses Ethernet's multicast abilities: it won't take longer to install 15 machines than it would to install 2. The tool comes with a busybox bootdisk for easy loading of the tool. However, udpcast can also be started from the command line of an already installed system, and can be used for other purposes than just system installation.
