From endless semesters of CS classes and/or endless cola-filled nights, hackers learn all the skills of their trade... or almost all. Who sat you down and taught you how to navigate an interview to make sure your next job is right for you? Since the answer is probably "no one", we're presenting an editorial today from Dennis Faust, who has spent a lot of time on the company side of the interview desk and offers his suggestions about what he should have heard coming from the other side. About: diet libc contains the system call wrappers and the most commonly-used functions you expect from a libc. It can be used to create small, statically-linked binaries under x86, AMD64, SPARC, SPARC64, PPC, PPC64, ARM, MIPS, MIPS64, PA-RISC, S/390, S/390x (64-bit S/390), and Alpha-Linux. Changes: Initial announcement.
About: Sysrinx is a semi-intelligent controller for mpg123 that features searching ID3 tags, weighted random song selection, and the ability to figure out what song the user is likely to want to hear next. Changes: Initial release.
About: iXalance/Linux is an Open Source Linux port of The Black Lotus's iXalance demo loader system for Win32. Changes: Initial freshmeat announcement.
About: ncp can copy files between networked computers and accounts without hassles (nor features like compression and encryption), and you do not even have to name the target machine if it is in the same LAN. npush and npoll can copy files (and pipe data) between machines without having the specify or even know the machine name in advance. Changes: A rewrite from scratch using libdjb, full IPv6 support, use of multicast (IPv6 or IPv4) for npush announcements, much less memory usage (no C++ standard library, no libc bloat), and a static Linux/x86 binary for boot and rescue disks is also provided.
About: DBACompanion is a graphical administration tool for Oracle databases. It features browsing the data dictionary, drilling down from one information to related ones, generation of SQL scripts based on data dictionary information, and customisation of all the SQL used by the tool. Changes: First release.
About: DBOX is a free communication package for ISPs. It supports a large number of message formats such as RFC/UUCP, ZConnect, Janus/Janus2, Alphabox, and GSbox. It is designed for large installations and includes a WWW package with an email/HTML gateway, an HTML online shop, support for POP3/IMAP4, and personal homepages with HTTP/FTP upload. Changes: A rewritten HTTP library, a new news->HTML gateway, improved security in the mail->HTML gateway, a small fix in table formatter, Webmail decodes MIME qp and base64, mimeparse handles nested multipart messages correctly, and a new billing module.
About: dkimap4 is a fast, easy-to-install IMAP4 daemon for UNIX and Win32 platforms. It supports mail folder quotas, ACL, UID+. Changes: Compile fixes for gcc 2.95 and Alpha machines, and new IMAP commands.
About: NJAMD (Not Just Another Malloc Debugger) is a malloc debugger that tries harder. It is completely threadsafe with immediate underflow and overflow detection, and features protecting already freed memory, heap persistence (for postmortem analysis) and excellent documentation. It traces all calls to malloc and free, even those wrapped in other libraries (i.e., widget allocation or C++ new and delete) back to your code. It does all this with minimal overhead, practically fast enough to be used as standard malloc, and without the need to even recompile or even relink your code. Changes: Storing a limited call trace instead of a single return address, a new option to get return addresses from libraries as opposed to just static code, a new function to be called from gdb to retrieve info on a pointer, an option to just track memory leaks by only wrapping standard libc malloc(), and more bugfixes.
About: Arianne is a multiplayer online engine to develop turn based and real time games. It provides a simple way of creating games using Python for a game's description. Marauroa, its server, uses Java, MySQL, UDP, and Python for hosting dozens of players. Changes: A new interface, a good explanation of why you can't connect, some bugfixes, and a new main image.
About: IceMe is a graphical menu and shortcut editor for the IceWM window manager, written in Python and GTK+. You can edit menu entries with drag and drop as well as cut and paste. Both the default menu and the local menu in the users home directory can be edited. Changes: Fixes for some problems with loading icons and invocation from PATH.
About: MeBay is a Perl/GTK client for eBay with support for "My eBay" bid and watch items, and support for several types of item searching. Item images can also be displayed when possible. Changes: Initial release.
About: ScanErrLog is a Python module that allows you to parse Apache error_log files and present their data in decreasing order of occurences of error messages. This is particularly useful if you want to quickly solve the most annoying problems Web visitors encounter on your site. You can use it directly from the command line, import it into another Python program and use the classes it defines, or use it as a CGI script. You can produce reports in HTML, PDF, XML, or Plain Text formats. Changes: Report output formats include HTML, TEXT, or XML (PDF support is planned), and new options, particularly one to exclude some messages from the final report according to their severity, without having to pass a complex regular expression on the command line.
About: The grep-dctrl program can answer many questions regarding Debian packages, given a useful input file. It is most useful as part of a Debian system, although there are meaningful uses for it in other systems as well. The program allows the user to search for all package records that match a search pattern and output the matching records or selected fields of them. As the program is a filter, it can usefully work together with standard Unixish tools. Changes: Searching in multiple fields is now possible.
About: QUB (the Q Universal Boardgame) is an electronic front-end to any board game, using a scanned game board and pieces. It is intended to be an aid for PBEM gamers, game designers, and (eventually) real-time networked boardgamers. Changes: Lots of little tweaks, including the ability to set background colors for non-GIF pieces (BMPs, XPMs, etc.).
About: GQL is a C++ library for generic SQL database access, modeled after JDBC (Java Database Connectivity). It includes drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite, and includes GQL-Shell, an interactive database terminal called that features command-line editing, history, and database metadata (schema) browsing. Changes: A new Interface 'class ResultSetMetaData' and two new examples have been added.
About: The PCI Utilities package contains various utilities dealing with the PCI bus, and also a library for portable access to PCI configuration registers. It includes `lspci' for listing all PCI devices (very useful for debugging of both kernel and device drivers) and `setpci' for manual configuration of PCI devices. Changes: lspci now understands PCI Power Management capabilities. min/max latencies are now printed in nanoseconds and do not choke on header types not matching the class info. Some new device IDs have been added.
About: Cybercube is a tetris-like game, but in 3D and with colors instead of different forms. It uses OpenGL and Glut, so it should work on all platforms supporting those libraries. Changes: Initial release.
About: PHFC (Phaethon's Hack For CUSP) is an emulator for the fictitious CUSP machine, which is used as an aid in introductory assembly and machine language courses. Changes: Initial freshmeat announcement.
About: Apache Cocoon is a Web development framework built around the concepts of separation of concerns and component-based Web development. Cocoon implements these concepts around the notion of "component pipelines", each component on the pipeline specializing on a particular operation. This makes it possible to use a Lego(tm)-like approach in building Web solutions, hooking together components into pipelines without any required programming. Changes: Many changes from the initial freshmeat announcement. SQL Taglib is a drastic improvement over the SQLProcessor. Overall performance improvements.
About: Achievo is a Web-based project management and tracking tool for small- to medium-sized companies, aiming to become a fully featured ERP-like system in the future. Features include a time registration module, scheduler, project management, todo's, and several statistical tools. Achievo is multi-language, fully customizable, and uses a modular system to allow future extensions. Changes: Development-release 0.5 changes include a complete new backend. Changes to the stable tree are bugfixes and support for french, spanish and italian.
About: LineControl allows you to remotely control the Internet connection of a Linux masquerading server using multiple clients. It takes care with the number of clients using the connection and decides upon this number whether the connection should be up or down. The clients show the time the connection is up and throughput statistics. Different connection types are supported, such as analog modems, ISDN, or even cable modems and ADSL devices. Changes: Minor bugfixes.
About: Gnometoaster is a full CD creation suite for X11 and GNOME. It can be used to copy and create data, audio, and mixed mode CDs on the fly or with precaching in both TAO and DAO mode. Data tracks can easily be created with the built-in file manager. GNOME drag-and-drop is supported throughout the program. Gnometoaster can also write MP3 files on the fly, is fully multisession capable, and can be used to encode all sorts of filetypes directly from audio audio tracks on a CD. Changes: A CDDB cache for faster retrieval, fixes for a memory leak in the CDDB code and a sector alignment problem with precached tracks, Debian packaging information, and initial FreeBSD support.
