This editorial by James Ramsey "attempts to counter Troll Tech's apparent misconceptions about the QPL/GPL controversy, and attempts to walk through the GPL to explain why it conflicts with the QPL." [Comments are disabled]
About: PyleWiki is a WikiClone written entirely in Python that allows a group of people to collaboratively edit a tree of webpages using nothing but their browser and a simple, text-based markup language. This particular WikiClone has a few extensions to the original: attachments to pages, user authentication (primitive), and the use of templates for page styling among others. Changes: Now supports the use of CVS as a database backend (an upgrade script is provided). Supports generation of a static offline HTML version of the database. Simple integration with Bill Fenner and Henner Zeller's cvsweb (for diffs etc).
About: Rip is a commandline-based Perl script which rips Compact Disc tracks to either Motion Picture Expert Group Layer 3 (MP3) files, Ogg Vorbis files, or FLAC files without user intervention between the steps of ripping. It supports cdparanoia and cdda2wav for ripping, BladeEnc, LAME, notLAME, and GOGO for WAV to MP3 encoding, oggenc for WAV to Ogg Vorbis encoding/tagging, FLAC for WAV to flac encoding. In addition, it supports CDDB for automatic renaming of files and MP3::Info for MP3 tagging. Changes: A fix was made for a "--move" bug which occured when attempting to move ripped mp3 files to a specified dir. Code was added to allow the user to only rip to *.wav and not rip all the way to *.mp3.
About: Wrabbit is an FTP server written entirely in Java. It provides a somewhat unique system for representing files, and implements both file/directory- and user-based security systems. Changes: Some internal updates, fixes for some bugs causing problems when uploading or downloading entire directories to and from the server, and the first bit of the GUI has been created.
About: The Cacheability Engine will check a URL you feed it for several things that will affect a Web cache, including web server clock skew, expires and Cache-Control headers, Last-Modified date presence, validation of LM date, Content-Length presence and more. It makes it easy to see how a cache will treat your content. There are also public engines running, so you don't have to install the software to use it for Internet-available sites. Changes: Various bugfixes, code cleanup, etc. All users are encouraged to upgrade.
About: XML for SCRIPT is a simple, non-validating XML DOM and SAX parser written in JavaScript. It was designed to help Web application designers implement cross-platform, client-side manipulation of XML data without having to resort to proprietary platform-limiting solutions. It includes extensive documentation on both its DOM and SAX parsers as well as a host of tools, sample applications, and test suites to aid in developing applications based on its technology. Changes: Switch to a single-pass parser, reworked DOM methods, and silent ignoring of processor instructions, entity declarations, and DTDs rather than failing.
About: ResCafé is a Swing-based Java utility for reading and extracting resources such as ICONs and MENUs from the Resource Forks of Macintosh files. In particular, it allows Linux users to use nifty Mac-only icons with their favorite desktop, e.g., KDE. It is somewhat similar to ResEdit on MacOS except that it is not an editor; it operates on files in a read-only fashion. The various resource types are parsed by auto-detected plugin handler classes. Changes: Completely replaced Jimi with XpmImage for all code including plugins. Also fixed ResCafe top class so multiple files can be loaded on the commandline.
About: QUB (the Q Universal Boardgame) is an electronic front-end to any board game, using a scanned game board and pieces. It is intended to be an aid for PBEM gamers, game designers, and (eventually) real-time networked boardgamers. Changes: Automasking is back in as an option. Rotation of an automasked piece is back in. Game now shows a "wait" cursor while loading a game. A bug which caused the status bar toggle to not work correctly if the status bar's initial setting was hidden has been fixed.
About: Moodss is a modular monitoring application, which supports operating systems (Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.), databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, DB2, ODBC, etc.), networking (SNMP, Apache, etc.), and any device or process for which a module can be developed (in Tcl, Python, Perl, Java, and C). An intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows the construction of dashboards with graphs, pie charts, etc., while the thresholds functionality includes emails and user defined scripts. Monitored data can be archived in a SQL database by both the GUI and the companion daemon, so that complete history over time can be made available from Web pages or common spreadsheet software. It can even be used for future behavior prediction or capacity planning, from the included predictor tool, based on powerful statistical methods and artificial neural networks. Changes: System, database, webserver and network monitoring is now possible. The "dashboard" interface has been significantly improved.
About: PhpWiki is a WikiWikiWeb clone written in PHP. A Wiki is a Web site where anyone can edit or create the pages through the Web browser, with no authentication. PhpWiki works right out of the box with zero configuration, and comes with a set of default pages. It's useful for collaborating on documentation on a project, having freeform discussions, and easy editing and searching. Changes: Some major new features have been added, including diffs between page versions, page hit counting, a set of administrative functions including page locking and automatic creation of Zip archives of all pages, full HTML compliance, tabless markup language additions, and much more.
About: Mserv is a jukebox-style music server designed to play MP3, Ogg, etc. (configurable) files based on ratings of users who are logged in to the system. It includes features such as searching, filtering, biased random play, queuing, talking, online and off-line track editing, and a standardised TCP protocol. This allows for a variety of interfaces including a built-in telnet interface, a command line program for scripting, a Perl-based Web client, and many 3rd-party GUI front ends. Changes: Bugfixes and a new album search command.
About: DBACompanion is a graphical administration tool for Oracle databases. It features browsing the data dictionary, drilling down from one information to related ones, generation of SQL scripts based on data dictionary information, and customisation of all the SQL used by the tool. Changes: Enhanced functionality through a large number of new screens that allow you to have a deeper look into the data dictionary and the use of MDI, simplifying the use of multiple instances of DBAComp at the same time.
About: Ulm's Modula-2 System includes a compiler (for SPARCv8 under Solaris 2.x), extensive libraries, and some tools including a makefile generator. The compiler and the library predate the Modula-2 ISO standard. A Modula-2 compiler generating native code for m68k is available as well. Changes: A minor bugfix of m2c (assertion failure for ARGV).
About: The Perl-RPM package is an attempt at native bindings to the C-level API of the RPM Package Manager. It uses a combination of Perl and C code to provide access to the package database, package headers, and other RPM functionality from within Perl. Changes: This is a low-impact release so that all current work on RPM::Header is on CPAN prior to integrating package and transaction classes.
About: fbi is an image viewer which displays images on Linux framebuffer devices. It can read PhotoCDs, jpeg, and ppm directly. For other formats it tries to use some external converter like convert from the ImageMagick package. Changes: A-s option and new keys have been added, and there is now a 'video mode'
