[»] great, - just missing some features
by aow - Nov 20th 2002 21:31:51

Very nice program, i will try to use it to handle my collection...
I love to add a movie just by typing in the imdb# and everything else the program gets by itself from the imdb...

...there are a some things i like the program could do in the future:

things i missed:

grabbing not only the director and artists - what about writer, special effects, music, make-up artists, etc?

some criteria to handle the movies:

- quality of the divx/vhs
- other bugs like broken frames, missing end-credits, bad audio, audio/video delay, wrong aspect ratio
- is it in the original language
- are there inserts or subtitles in the movie
- does the move have another length then the IMDB says
- size (HxL), maybe framerate of the divx
- which video-codec and/or audio-codec needed
- lenght (bytes) and maybe a md5 checksum to check if someone has another/same divx
- location (club-room, company, maybe which video-store, who has borrowed my movie, public- or academic library)
- subtitles and
- "big" CD/DVD cover availability

...and i need some other ways to sort movies by year, quality, seen, votings, language (subtitle-language)

...why are the "headshots" that tiny and can't be opend in a seperate window?

...Yes, I'am always that "critical" ;-)
The program is (as i said before) great and i just want to tell somebody what i love to see in version 1.0 ;-)

great work - please don't stop working on it!!!

...bye...

    hi!

grabbing not only the director and artists - what about writer, special effects, music, make-up artists, etc?

    post 1.0 features ;-)

    - quality of the divx/vhs
    - other bugs like broken frames, missing
    [ .... ]
    - subtitles and

avimanager is easy to configure. you can add the fields in aviman.cfg. I know that the documentation is not very good, but maybe someone who like the program can help here. a documentation written by an user is often better than one written by the developers.

    > - "big" CD/DVD cover availability

imdb changed here things. it was supported, maybe i find a solution to grab this from amazon.com.

...and i need some other ways to sort movies by year, quality, seen, votings, language (subtitle-language)

this is already in current cvs which rocks ;-). expect MANY new nice features in 0.8

...why are the "headshots" that tiny and can't be opend in a seperate window?

    i will fix this

    thanks for your hints!

I'll try and have a deeper look in the config, thanx.

If I understand a little more what's going on there I could write/help with the doku, but as you can read I'm not a native english speaker/writer, maybe i could write it in german and someone will translate it?

I'm looking myself for covers and already have a lot in a format i like, i just want to store it all together, the info and the subs and the pictures, so i just need a way to upload the big covers (like the subtitles but I want to see in every view (just a line/a big one (what's new)/full view) if there is a subtitle AND a "Big-Cover-Picture" available...

Thanks, great! I downloaded the current CVS-Version and the sort-funktion works!!! ...just the "non-imdb" voting isn't sortable (last column) - Isn't it that easy, 'cause it isn't a simple fixed data-field in the db, or have you forgotten it? ;-)

...by the way: there isn't an Image called "image10_3.gif" it has to do with the "lent" feature?!

      > ...why are the "headshots" that tiny
      > and can't be opend in a seperate window?
      >
      > i will fix this

Please add the same funktion "view-big-picture" to the DVD-Covers itself (if there is an entry in the future "big-covers" directory) to view/download them... ;-)

      > thanks for your hints!
      >

No, thank YOU for the fast reply, there are just two questions left(today) ;-) :

What is the meaning of "burned/unburned" in this program - if I select "burned" there is a red checkmark in the list, if I select "unburned" there is a CD-logo in the list... I would prefer to swap the logos and change the default (add new movie) to "burned"...
I think "It's on a CD" is the "best" and shows a CD-logo... And if "unavailable" is just the 3rd and "lent" is the 4th state a move can get i'd like to switch them, too... I think the ranking should be:
      1st (best): burned
      2nd : unburned
      3rd : lent
      4rd : unavailable/lost in space

Is there something i misunderstood, or would you agree?

what's the meaning of the "owner(s)"?

      - first i thought every movie has a single owner, but in the CVS-Version the quick-search doesn't displays just the movies the selected users "owns", but much more...
Is there a way to have multiple "owners" for one movie, and how do i change them?
I just find a Botton named "Change" next by the Text "Owner: Add/Remove:"
and if i press them i could only switch between Owner: ME/NONE

I can't "give" it to someone else or Add another user, also owns a (maybe different VHS/DVD) version of the movie...
Is it a missing feature or does it mean there is a difference between the "owners" in the config file and the new added users and everybody in the owners-list owns all movies exept the movie a "user" added??

      ...big confusion...maybe just a bug?! ;-)

Oh, i like the lent feature VERY much, is there a way to make viewable WHO is the temporary owner of it, when i select the movie?

I just find a list at the start page...

...still loving the program, hope i can add a "quality", etc. field by myself, thanks again for the work so far,

      .......bye...

this would be VERY cool. please contact me (mriester@gmx.de).

i simply was too lazy to do this. it will be of course in 0.8.

there will be a link from the thumbnail to the cover if a big cover exists.

the unburned logo is the kde icon for cd_writer. maybe i can find icons that are better. i will add support for different status-fields for different videotypes. like the guy here mentioned, you shouldn't burn a vhs tape ;-). so i need new icons, that are not so specific.

        > 1st (best): burned
        > 2nd : unburned
        > 3rd : lent

you are right. will fix this too

quicksearch does not find the owners, if finds the best movies for the selected people. it is the "find movie" page with its default values. this is our main feature and the reason why i made this script.

        > Is there a way to have multiple "owners"

        > ...big confusion...maybe just a bug?!

add/remove is new and not long tested or polished. there are minor bugs and i will fix them for 0.8. what it should be (in my opinion, but let me know if you think it is stupid):
        - you can add owners in aviman.cfg. they must have [SU] accounts.
        - yes, a movie can have multiple owners.
        - if someone joins your database, he can add his movies fast with the add/remove button.
        - support for different videotypes for every owner is not planed, we have a comment field for things like that.

i wrote this database just because i was tired of long discussions which movie we should watch and tired of watching bad movies [ be warned, this feature works so good, you will spent many hours more in front of your tv/pc ;-) ]. now it's a little portal and 1-2 features are bad hacks/very limited, because they where never planed and it would be a lot of work to do a cleaner version. but hey, they work.

        > Oh, i like the lent feature VERY much,
        > is there a way to make viewable WHO is

this app is just the perfect solution to all your problems!
it manages your movie collection, supports multiple owners per movie, allows you and your friends to vote your favourite movies and even has nice statistics.
i couldn't live without it anymore!

This thing rocks. I use it to categorize all my movies. I'd prefer a MySQL backend, but what it does do, it does very well. I don't often run web apps, but this one cuts the mustard.

Same here; very good interface but I wish the thing had a MySQL backend. I prefer storing all data in one location (MySQL) and it allows me to easily run my on queries on them.

thanks for your comments! most people who write to me don't care about the backend, they just want an easy to install movie database. some really like the text-database, some prefer a mysql-backend. i just wanted to keep system requirements as low as possible, which is VERY important on free webhosters like virtualave.net. our database is fast enough (we use fast algorithms like binary search where it is possible) and stable. i hope, this is no reason to switch to another script.

Unless I can find something that's easier to setup and use than this (which I doubt, just love the IMDB interface), I'm not switching. This is the swiss army knife for movie lovers...

        Couple of my requests:
        - don't limit to dvd/cd's, also add tapes etc... I use it for my vhs tapes which will be destroyed if I try to burn them ;-)
        - some built-in imdb-connection to add movies (so I don't have to go to IMDB and get the IMDB-number)
        - option to disable password changing for guest account (so I can give a generic account to friends)
        - a MySQL backend option (not a must but it would be damn nice).
