About:
BitlBee allows users to talk to people on the MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Yahoo!, and AIM networks with any IRC client by emulating an IRC server. A virtual channel is created with all of the user's buddies in it, who can be talked to in the channel or in a query. Also, one can participate in group chats and chat rooms like they were normal IRC channels.

Invisible Bee
by Bodhi - Dec 28th 2004 00:00:29
Any idea how to mark myself invisible, using AWAY or UMOD, and how to make
it selective (like "/away 2 Invisible", to mark me Invisible on
third account) supposing that the server support this feature.
For now I make a little patch to make me invisible for Y!, with
"/away Invisible". I didn't test it too much.
Take it from:

Thanks for the patch, I wish I noticed it before. Didn't know the
inivisibility was broken so far! I applied this patch to devel and 1.0.1
now.

i also want that feature - so i tried to do it on my own - it seams to
work with icq and i absolutly dunno if it breaks anything - but if you want
to try it:

Great idea, but still not there
by I. M. Bur - Oct 16th 2003 06:24:51
I would really love to use this, as it looks like an ideal solution to me
(me being a console guy as well), but BitlBee never imports any contacts
from the server. And since I do not like the idea of importing 150+
contacts by hand, I will have to wait for some other version, which will
work...

Downloading the contact list is not possible for ICQ, but for other
protocols it does work, and there are some scripts available to convert
contact lists from other programs to BitlBee.
This is not perfect, we know that, so a new future version will hopefully
come with better IM libraries.

Interestingly enough, Gaim has no trouble downloading ICQ contacts from the
server. Perhaps it is possible to use their code in this matter?
Anyway, thanks for reply and keep up the good work :)

Gaim has changed a lot since we "stole" their IM-code from Gaim 0.58, so
it's going to be hard to backport these changes. But we'll certainly find
something in the (hopefully near) future.
Thanks for the comment, hope to see you later.

as of version 0.90, ICQ server side buddylists are
supported.

Correction: Version 0.91 (which will be released really soon) and newer
will support ICQ server-side buddy lists.
0.90 was supposed to support them as well, but the support wasn't ready
for release yet at the time 0.90 came out so I pulled it.

The Bee owns
by Maitre - Apr 20th 2004 13:35:24
Very good concept, this is just about all I use, as far as IM goes. There
is one issue I have not been able to resolve, though. On the Jabber server
at my office, we use an alerter service to send jabber alerts, to report on
various statistics. The "alert" user is always in offline mode, and my
bitlbee account can't seem to receive any messages from it. I don't know
the details of this alerter service, but I wondered if there is some nicer
offline user-handling I am missing out on?

Well, it handles messages from people who are off-line quite well,
normally. I don't know what's the problem here then, the Jabber module
seems to be a bit bad at some points.
Do you have more information about how the message fails to be delivered?
Some error messages? Traffic logs/dumps?

Re: Jabber issue
by Maitre - Aug 13th 2004 13:57:03
Sorry I've been away from this thread for so long, but I'm back with some
interest here. I was not able to find any errors relating to this issue.
All I know is, the automatic alert system uses a simple perl script to
connect to the jabber server and send a message. Users (including me) on
any other jabber client can receive alerts, but any user on bitlbee fails
to receive.
Any suggestions on what sort of traffic I should be looking for, or how to
go about grabbing it?

Re: Jabber issue - solution?
by Maitre - Aug 17th 2004 12:54:51
Right. After a little packet capture, I was able to glean that the alert
messages contain the tag , while messages from other users contain . A
quick grep through protocols/jabber/jabber.c revealed that (from what I
could tell) only messages with type=chat were being handled.
Odds are there are other message types in the jabber protocol; would it be
feasible to just handle any type of message?

Brilliant idea, but slight execution problem.
by Gemini Domino - Sep 14th 2003 02:51:31
At least, I can't execute it. ;)
I've tried building it both on my FreeBSD 4-Stable system and my Slackware
9.0 system and I have the same problem with both. The software will build
and the daemon run, but it immediately drops any connections.
bash-2.05a$ telnet localhost 6667
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
I've checked hosts.allow even though I turned off tcpd support, just in
case. What obvious newbie error am I making here? :)

I don't know what it could be, but maybe syslog can tell you. This might
mean the bitlbee binary can't be executed or even found.

I had this problem as well. Just today I got the idea of looking at
/etc/xinet.conf and saw
only_from = localhost
Tried disabling that, and bingo.. success =)

reconnect
by tooar - Jan 27th 2003 06:08:41
how can i tell bitlebee to auto-reconnect after it has lost the connection?
i use it for icq only. my provider unfortunately has a 24h disconnect and
every time it happens i have to reconnect to the bitlebee server and
reidentify myself in order to get connected to icq again.

Problem is that a disconnect can be caused by network troubles, but also
by you logging in with another program or from another location. If we
reconnect when you have logged in differently we can a race-condition: the
two programs will keep reconnecting and kicking each other off the network.
We will improve bitlbee in the future to see the difference between two
such disconnects.

well, i wouldnt mind that, i know for sure that i wont try to login a 2nd
time.
besides one could make it save and allow only, lets say 3 auto-reconnects
every 24h hours, that should be enough.
or only auto-reconnect if youve been connected for more than one hour
before.

Re: reconnect
by Wilmer van der Gaast - Apr 13th 2003 14:41:03
The connection/account system is going to be redesigned. Reconnecting will
be a matter of "reconnect x" instead of /reconnect or re-entering the whole
login string.
That sounds a lot better to me. Fully automatic reconnecting won't be that
hard as soon as I get this implemented.

I finally implemented this last week, so if you're interested you might
want to take a look. It seems to work quite well for most testers.
Sorry for the doublepost, I hope Galeon will behave this time. :-/
