Changes: The defaults for LaTex checks were improved with regards to math and italics.

Changes: DESTDIR is supported for installation to help distributions. An old standing patch from Jean-Marc Lasgouttes to compile outside the directory was applied. Compilation on MacOS X was enabled. Various coding issues were fixed.
