Fd Linux

Fd Linux is a mini floppy distribution of Linux set to fit on 1 floppy disk (kernel and root fs are combined). The sole purpose of this floppy distribution is to provide new Linux users with low-end machines (such as a 386) a very useful set of networking related binaries that can be easily accessed at any time, and which can be used in almost any networked environment (libraries, colleges, offices, small home LANs, dorm rooms, etc.).

Changes: In this version, the kernel was upgraded to 2.4.20 and migrated to iptables. PCMCIA support was added to incorporate PCMCIA network cards and 802.11b wireless adapters, such as Lucent/Orinoco, Cisco, and D-Link cards. There was a complete rewrite of the rc.network automatic network configuration script, and this version moves over to the uClibc library set to save on space, upgrades to the udhcp DHCP client/server binaries, compiles in more commands and functions into BusyBox, provides working add-on packages for usage expansion, has the ability to mount extra portions of RAM to expand file system, and features much more.

Changes: The ability to automatically save your network settings to the small filesystem that resides on the bootup disk was added, eliminating the need to reconfigure the network after each boot. The kernel was updated (to 2.2.20), as was BusyBox (to 0.60.2). The if-up and if-down scripts were added to aid network card configuration. LILO was integrated into the Fd Linux bootup process.

Changes: This release resides on one floppy disk (kernel and root fs on one image), uses busybox to minimize rootfs size and increase binary variety, has increased firewalling capabilities, has modular loading for network cards, and can made add-on packages for users to get more functionality out of the stock Fd Linux. It adds time/date stamping to all logs, the ability to mount floppy disks, vfat (Win 9x) filesystem support, and advanced network setup scripts.
