Speedtouch USB ADSL Drivers

The GPL Speedtouch USB ADSL driver is different from the "official" Alcatel Linux drivers in several respects. First, it is implemented in user-space, which means that the application of kernel patches or insertion of kernel modules is not required. It also implements its on pppoa encapsulation, so you can use the standard pppd program. Finally, it doesn't use a binary-only managment program. For this driver to work, you will need access to a file that is included with both the official Windows and Linux drivers. This file contains the microcode that is uploaded to the modem.

Changes: This version support hotplug, a functionality that allows users to connect to the Internet simply by plugging in their modem in an available USB port. Configuration, start, and stop scripts have been added (speedtouch-setup, speedtouch-start, speedtouch-stop). Those scripts allow you to configure either a PPPoA or a PPPoE connection, but they do not work on BSD yet. SpeedTouch 330 modems are now recognized without special options, except that you need to provide the proper firmware (available from the Thomson web site as a Zip archive).

Changes: This release adds compilation fixes, PPPoE for FreeBSD, CRC error fixes, and better firmware detection.

Changes: In this release, modem_run uses a new method to detect the link state, the portable USB library has been updated for the new USB structures in *BSD's async mode in pppoa3, and the adsl-conf-pppd script was updated to handle Debian. Documentation updates were made, including Italian and German translations of the Linux docs, and Italian, German, and French translations for BSD. Also added were a configuration checker for Linux (speedtouch-doctor), a new ADSL peer sample for Linux (full of comments), and RPM and Debian packages.

Changes: This release adds an async mode for pppoa3 (option -a/--async), a new method to detect the ADSL state during startup, syslog support for modem_run (BSD users should add a modem_run entry to their /etc/syslog.conf), GNU/Linux packaging for Debian and updated information for the RPM distributions. Various fixes were made, and Italian and German HOWTO translations were added.

Changes: A number of minor tweaks were made to the code, including fixes for usbdevfs, compatability with Linux 2.5.x kernels, and syslog support on modem_run. The project now can build working RPMs.

There is now a patch the hacks pppoa together with Roaring Penguins pppoe client. Check out the project page for details.
