Hotwayd

Hotwayd is a POP3/SMTP to HTTPMail (WebDAV) gateway. HTTPMail is a somewhat undocumented WebDAV-based protocol used by a variety of mail servers including Hotmail, MSN, Lycos, and Spray. Hotwayd allows you to use any standard POP3/SMTP mail reader to send and receive mail via these servers, similar to the way that Outlook Express can access a hotmail account. It supports features such as folder selection to get folders other than the inbox and proxy server support (if you require a proxy to access the internet).

Changes: xinetd configuration scripts have been updated for hotwayd/hotsmtpd (there were some conflicts). Detection of cyrus-sasl v2 for hotsmtpd is improved, and should prevent problems during compilation. Hotsmtpd now works with lycos/spray. There was a problem with the way hotsmtpd was sending HTTP requests, which has been fixed. 64-bit machines such as AMD 64 should now work with hotwayd/hotsmtpd. There was a problem with libghttp. There are also installation guide and documentation improvements.

Changes: This version adds hotsmtpd, an ESMTP to HTTPMail proxy. It fixes a bug related to a Bus Error on Mac OS X, updates the documentation, and generally cleans up some code.

Changes: This release adds the ability to mark messages as read on the server when they are downloaded, plus the ability to specify who can access the hotwayd server. It also cleans up the code, and makes it more modular.

It's pretty slick!
A little searching with google turned up a perfect xinetd.d config. In theory you could use ssh with a forced command in your authroized_keys file and specify the select identity to run hotwayd remotely.

I however decided to install it locally for Mac OS X Mail to use as a pop account. The only short-comming I find is no support for IMAP. It might also be nice for it to see if it's running from a terminal or a socket, and use STDERR to notify the user they might want usage help.

At any rate, thanks for providing it. It'll save me from hotmail's hideous webmail interface! yippie!
