OpenBSD
The OpenBSD project produces a free, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system. Our efforts place emphasis on portability, standardization, correctness, security, and cryptography. OpenBSD supports binary emulation of most programs from SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSDI, SunOS, and HPUX.

Changes: This release adds hardware support, a RAID management interface, a wireless host access daemon, major improvements to bgpd and ospfd, large improvements in NFS write performance, guard pages (which help in detecting heap based buffer overflows and prevent various types of attacks), and OpenSSH 4.2. malloc(3) now uses mmap(2), introducing unpredictable allocation addresses.

Changes: A new platform is supported: OpenBSD/luna88k. SMP support was added on OpenBSD/i386 and OpenBSD/amd64. A new NTP daemon, hotplug, and USB 2.0 support were added. BGP and NFS performance and reliability were improved. New packages include OpenSSH 3.9, OpenSSL 0.9.7d, XFree86 4.4.0, GCC 2.95.3 and 3.3.2, Perl 5.8.5, Apache 1.3.29, Sendmail 8.13.0, BIND 9.2.3, Lynx 2.8.5rel.2 with HTTPS and IPv6 support, ncurses 5.2, the latest KAME IPv6, Binutils 2.14, and GDB 6.1.

Recent commentsunderdog, underrated, under the radar OS
This OS is awesome. It is the most secure and stable OS I have ever seen. It runs exceedingly well on ancient equipment, and installs in about ten minutes. No extra cruft. No kitchen sink. Just a nice tight BSD UNIX OS. Very killer firewall package (pf) built in.
Oh, BTW, 3.1 is out now and unfortunately was not announced here. I'm running it on a firewall with 10 ethernet adapters and it is just rock solid.
