Changes: This is the first public beta version of phpBB 3 (codename Olympus). It features caching of templates, configuration permissions, file attachments, extended user administration, subforums, and a lot of other improvements and new features.

Changes: Changes to the random number generator code, fixes for quoting and special characters on boards with HTML enabled, a correction for errors in the removal of old session keys, changed filtering of short search terms, and improved filtering on language selection. More efficient highlighting code was backported along with the zlib emulation code from Olympus.

Changes: This release is a cumulative bugfix update that also includes a number of minor security fixes. A new feature that allows you to limit how often a user may conduct a search if you find that searches are putting a load on your server was added. The default permissions on new forums were changed so that you must explicitly make them available for guests to post in and visual confirmation was enabled by default on all new installs.

Changes: Session-table fixes were made. Changes were made to support MySQL 5.0. Some fixes were made in the adin files. Truncation of username length was changed. Captcha now works without zlib. XSS issues with Internet Explorer were fixed. The number of maximum login attempts is now configurable.

It doesnt have near the features or customizations as vbulletin... but from the other free boards Ive tried it does seem to be the best amoung the free... it certainly was easy to get up and running quickly.

Keep your installation up to date
A word of warning is in place. Phpbb is a very popular software, and security holes in it attract a huge attention among script kiddies. Basically what they do is run google searches for vulnerable installations and use automated scripts to hack your installation.

Few tips that might help:

- Keep your installation up to date

- Disable safe mode, if it works for you

- Add a robots.txt to disallow access to your forums
