ReactOS is an advanced operating system providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft Windows XP compatible operating system. It aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.

Changes: Various NDIS and AFD problems have been solved, which increases compatibility with third party NIC drivers and hardening of the network stack. Preliminary support was added for sound via the new Kernel Streaming service. It's now possible to use the ac97 driver via the new Port Class library to play sound bytes using winamp. The command prompt is more compatible. Many bugfixes were made to the kernel mode portion of the GDI, resulting in a much improved drawing engine across all bit depths.

Changes: Various bugfixes and enhancements to kernel core services (e.g. registry, system information routines, sync primitives like guarded mutex, I/O support, and others). An initiative has been started to fix the remaining unstable parts of the kernel: Memory Manager, caching code, and filesystem driver APIs and other dependencies of Mm. Introduction of a new Portable Structured Exception Handling mechanism (PSEH 2.0). Various GDI drawing problems were fixed.

Changes: x64 architecture support was improved. A real MSVC compiler support project was started. Kernel improvements and bugfixes were made in quite a few parts: Configuration Manager, IO Manager, KE, Memory Manager, Object Manager, Process Manager. The network stack was improved with leakage fixes and increased functionality. Filesystem driver fixes were made, making them more compatible with the Microsoft NT cache manager. Win32 subsystem improvements and synching of most of the Wine usermode DLLs were done.

Changes: The Cm (Config Manager a.k.a. registry support) in ntoskrnl was completely rewritten. This makes it much more compatible with NT5.2 (win2k3). A plug-n-play keyboard and mouse driver was added. All usermode DLLs were synchronized with the most recent Wine release. Support for RPC and IDL (which was quite outdated and buggy) was finally brought up to date, providing a solution for the plug-n-play manager problems, ReactOS Services, and promising future support for complex applications such as Microsoft Office. Huge improvements were made to user32, which now uses the desktop heap, greatly speeding up the UI.

Changes: Kernel improvements bringing many areas closer to NT 5.2. Improved hardware support. A stability increase in many core modules, especially win32k. Many changes to base system drivers aimed at increasing compatibility and stability. A rewrite of a number of kernel modules is finished; others have bugfixes to improve stability. A download utility has been added. There are improvements to many of the core user mode applications and control panel applets.

The kernel is getting more and more stable and much of the Win32 GDI has been completed, but there is still a lot to do.
Work has begun porting WINE from the Linux platform though it can't be completed without a fully functional GDI. If you can offer any help with any part of this project then please visit reactos.com and subscribe to the mailing list to find out what's going on at present.
