Recoll

Recoll is a personal full text desktop search tool based on Xapian. It provides an easy to use, feature-rich, easy administration interface with a Qt-based GUI. Text, HTML, PDF, PostScript, MS Word, OpenOffice, Wordperfect, KWord, Abiword, maildir, and mailbox mail folder formats are supported, along with their compressed versions. Powerful query facilities are provided. Multiple character sets are supported, and internal processing and storage uses Unicode UTF-8. Stemming is performed at query time and the stemming language can be switched after indexing.

Excellent product
Do you plan to add the ability to index smb shares? How can I help?

This is HUGE -- exceptional piece of software
I've recently changed from Windows to Kubuntu. I

tried beagle, I tried strigi, I tried google desktop

search. Non of the search tools were even close

to what I wanted.

I was quite frustrated and was already trying to

run old versions of CopernicDesktopSearch (the

tool I liked best when I ran Windows) in Wine.

But now the pain is over! Recoll is so much better

than any of those other solutions! I haven't used

it a lot, but it looks extremely powerful, so far!

Give it a try.

recoll-1.7.5
I've followed the versions from 1.1 up to present 1.7.5. The latest is much better even than the early versions - recommended to anyone!

Thanks. It works even better!
I was first put onto recoll by people on a Mandriva Expert mailing list and have found it genuinely good, unfussy, fast and not greedy in its demands on CPU and memory.

The further developments which I believe will be in version 1.5 are extremely valuable. I look forward to its appearing.
