Salvare

Salvare (from the Latin "to rescue") is a small Linux distribution designed for small, credit-card sized CDs which typically hold around 34MB. More Linux than tomsrtbt but less than Knoppix, it aims to provide a useful workstation as well as a rescue disk. In addition to providing a rescue environment similart to tomsrtbt, it adds OpenSSH, a graphical and text mode Web browser (Links), security tools such as chkrootkit, nmap, and tcpdump, the ability to apt-get install additional software from Debian into tmpfs, the ability to run entirely from RAM, and much more. It's also customizable using a simple source-code based package management system.

Changes: Apart from bugfixes, the major change is an "install-debian" command which will start an included (and exclusive) Debian installer. It also includes improved bootstrapping code to allow it to boot from a floppy and CD or from a floppy and network. Beta USB support and much improved hardware detection were added.

Changes: This release sets up for the 0.3.0 release in terms of architecture changes, etc.: the boot process is now entirely BusyBox based (which has been upgraded to 1.00-pre2), the system can be customised using a bootstrap floppym, and the Debian mirror can be customised during manual configuration. chkrootkit will no longer report false positives against Salvare itself (and has been upgraded to the latest version), the network card probe is less likely to hang certain hardware configurations, and localisation issues are resolved.
