SoL (Server optimized Linux) is a Linux distribution completely independent from other Linux distributions. It was built from the original source packages and is optimized for heavy-duty server work. It contains all common server applications, and features XML boot and script technology that makes it easy to configure and make the server work.

Changes: A fast and easy installation system with a RAID wizard. Support for network (over PXE) and DVD installation. Optimized for modern CPU architectures. Ready to use as XEN dom0 or domU. QEMU mode to boot right from Windows. "Ready for Cluster" technology. Perfect integration for heterogenous environments. Advanced XML boot technology. Integrated server development workbench tools. Full-featured diskless training, evaluation, and rescue modes. "Ready for Virtualization" technology (featuring XEN and QEMU).

Changes: This is the fifth stable release of SoL since 2002. The installation- and rescue-system is now based on the new SoL-ISI technology, which was first introduced in the live-CD distribution XoL 18.00. RunSoL, the XML boot-technology introduced by antitachyon was extended by many features. The release includes gcc 3.3.3 and gcc 2.95.3 integration with fast-switching, Linux Kernel 2.6.6, a multilanguage installer (English, German, Nederlands, Italian, Spanish, and Greek), the LIVE-CD Diagnosis and rescue system SoL-ISI, a ready to run copy of spamassassin, and easy X11 configuration.

Changes: This version uses the SoLIv2 installation system, which features software RAID support, a quick-install mode for automatic mass-installations, and a clear step-by-step installation menu. Servers can be installed within 30 minutes. It also included an enhanced XML boot system, SoL-diag 2.0, which facilitates fast and easy diagnosis of computers, and music from three Austrian bands.

Changes: This version includes GNOME 1.4 and 2.2, KDE 3.1 with multimedia extensions, tons of KDE 3.1 applications, OpenOffice 1.0.2, MP3 encoders, PalmPilot utilities, the ImageMagick graphic tools, the Gaim AOL/ICQ/MSN client, Licq, Gimp 1.3.13, TeTeX, and Mozilla 1.3.

SoL does not contain these desktop-applications. They are in the desktop-extension to SoL, called SoL-desktop, for people who want to use SoL as workstation/desktop and don't want to get the packages or use another distribution. I use SoL-desktop on top of SoL, for example.

Its an add-on package for SoL 16.00. Its NOT a standalone distribution! SoL-desktop was made because the SoL community requested it and antitachyon was so nice and developed it.
Applications not server orientated
I was bit suprised that "Server Optimised Linux" has now got applications like kde / gnome / mp3 encoders / gimp etc. Surely those are applications for a desktop enviroment, and not for a server?
