Zim is a WYSIWYG text editor written in Gtk2-Perl It aims to bring the concept of a wiki to your desktop. Every page is saved as a text file with wiki markup. Pages can contain links to other pages, and are saved automatically. Creating a new page is as easy as linking to a non-existing page. Pages are ordered in a hierarchical structure that gives it the look and feel of an outliner. This tool is intended to keep track of TODO lists or to serve as a personal scratch book.

Recent releases

Changes: A bug with the previous release where lines in HTML output did not wrap correctly was fixed, and support for RTL scripts in HTML output was added. A plugin for including GraphViz diagrams and a plugin to sort a text selection were added. The template for the Equation editor was changed to allow line breaks.

Changes: New features include proper support for Subversion version control and support for auto-mounting encrypted directories. This release also introduces checkbox lists (this feature has been integrated with the TODOList plugin). A translation for Traditional Chinese was added.

Changes: This release adds version control based on Bazaar, along with a "Save Version" action and a "Versions" dialog to browse older versions. The wiki syntax has been changed to allow non-verbatim paragraphs to be indented. Critical bugs on Windows and with Perl 5.10 are fixed. Translations have been added for Finnish, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese.

Changes: This release fixes a variety of small bugs and updates all translations. For GTK+ 2.10 or later, Gtk2:TrayIcon is no longer required, rather the standard StatusIcon is now used. New translations were added for Danish, Russian, and Galician.

Changes: Zim now has a background process that keeps track of open notebooks and makes sure each notebook is opened only once. Attached files and images are now handled more consistently throughout the application. The notebook configurati file got its own MIME type, so you can start zim by clicking this file from your file browser. A todo-list plugin has been added and the calendar now uses a namespace per month for scalability. Many bugfixes are included. Translations for German, French, Italian, and Hebrew were added.

Recent commentsZim is so simple and powerful. I like that I can stick with plain text files but create nicely formatted documents and organise them logically. The new Windows installer works great too. Hope I can help with the project in the future.
Hello,
Really good software!! Easy to use, but very powerful. I use Zim instead of Freemind now to keep my knowlegde databease.
One question: Is there a way to use characters like "ยง", "/" and "," in namespaces?

Zim on Windows XP
I use Zim on Debian and Ubuntu and like it a lot. However, I also have Windows XP boxes on the LAN and I move around quit a bit. I want to install Zim on the XP boxes, but the instructions on the website do not seem to work or there is something missing. How can I get clear instructions that work?
Thanks
