 CheckBook Tracker 1.0 (Default)
Section: Unix

Added: Sat, Sep 21st 2002 12:37 UTC (5 years, 11 months ago) Updated: Tue, Jul 8th 2008 20:09 UTC (1 month, 14 days ago)

Screenshot About:
In order to leave Windows behind most people need a fully-functional money management program. CheckBook Tracker seeks to solve that problem. It has the feel and features of packages like Microsoft Money without requiring the user to build their own sources or find an RPM for their distribution. Its features include Import / Export QIF files straight from Money or Quicken, autocomplete, check printing, split transactions, balance forecasts, online banking, and more.

Release focus: Major bugfixes

Changes:
This release adds payee transaction reporting and importing from CBB. There is greatly improved load/save speed and forecast graph speed. The tax report not displaying splits correctly and other miscellaneous minor issues have been fixed. Complete help files are now included.

[»] only wish is for mulitple accounts
by Arkane - Oct 22nd 2007 11:46:48

This application is probably the closest what my dream of a simple, fast finance application with forecasting and scheduled transactions, etc... the only clincher is the single account.

Multiple accounts would seal the deal... being able to transfer between accounts on a scheduled date is the only thing I do in MS Money that this cannot do... it eats at my very heart :P

[»] If it doesn't run...
by Tony Maro - Mar 26th 2007 07:32:41

If it doesn't run when you launch it, chances are you don't have the pixbuf libraries installed. Use your favorite package manager to install anything with "pixbuf" in the name. Normally this is libgtk-pixbuf2 or similar.

Failing that, try opening a console and run it from there. Perhaps you'll get an error message.

    Hi Tony,

I recently upgraded from PCLinuxOS .93 BigDaddy to PCLinuxOS 2007 and no longer could get CheckBook Tracker to work.
After reading your post I used Synaptic to search for "pixbuf". I ended up using Synaptic to add "libgdk-pixbuf2". Now cbtracker is working great again!

I also wanted to let you know the download link on your web site might be messed up. Instead of pointing to this file:

    http://tony.maro.net/files/cbtracker-1.0b.tar.gz

It directs one to this incorrect location:
    http://tony.maro.net/ossramblings.php?file=/files/cbtracker-1.0b.tar.gz
...which doesn't work. But maybe it's just a Firefox problem on my end. Tony, thanks for writing a great checkbook program.
I use it to do the books on our small Trucking operation. I'd be lost without it. Thanks again.

[»] Finally! Version 1.0
by Tony Maro - Sep 9th 2003 10:35:47

I just posted 1.0. One big thing is that users of CBB (see the Freshmeat project) can now import their data into cbtracker. The QIF export of CBB was severely broken in the last release almost 2 years ago, so I implemented a direct from .cbb import. Other bugs have been fixed, and optimizations included. You'll also find a Payee report accessible by right clicking on a given transaction.

[»] Online Banking
by Tony Maro - Mar 24th 2003 07:16:31

The latest edition of CBT includes support for online banking, but ONLY through OFX files. If your bank's website allows downloading transactions in OFX format, you're set! Just download the OFX file from your bank and then import it into CBT using the "Tools+Balance From OFX".

Enjoy!

[»] Non-critical, but annoying problems with list/select boxes..
by RC - Dec 19th 2002 08:15:25

I've seen a problem getting the 'New' check 'Check Number' box to accept a 'Print' option. Sometimes you can click on 'print' and the next check number remains. I've found a quick work-around: click on 'next number' and click elsewhere, and then click on 'print' to get the entry to change. (Apparently something is not getting properly read/set in the control).

Side note: I've seen while searching on the net that there are several comments claiming that your program can't print multiple checks (ie on 3-up check forms). As you know (and others should) it CAN do so. You might do a google and post a correction/defence.

Known issue - it's GTK related though. The widget appears to ignore the first mouse-click sometimes. If you press and hold or slightly drag the mouse across the "Print" text, it works. Only real answer I can give is: "it's not my code doing it."

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't googled it in a while. Perhaps I should finally get around to writing the help files... LOL

[»] Can't find the means to print multiple checks
by RC - Dec 16th 2002 11:39:45

Actually I can't print *any* check. How do you select multiple checks to print?

It's just like Money does it... When entering the checks, select "PRINT" as the check number. After you have a few entered, then select print checks from the file menu. It will then ask what check number to start printing with and will update the entries to replace "PRINT" with the appropriate check number in your register.

I'm an old Quicken type - you might include something in the readme for those of us who have never seen MS Money.

[»] It's GPL'd?
by gorjusborg - Dec 11th 2002 07:47:49

I don't mean to be a pest, but you say on your webpage that the program is GPL'd. I read your license and it is infact GPL'd. I'm confused by the fact that you don't have any obvious links to source, and you don't distribute the source with the program.

Am I missing something?

Where is the source?

Sorry for the confusion. The sources ARE on the website right underneath the ELF download link and states "Pascal sources for use in Lazarus". The sources currently posted are a little bit old, and I am working on cleaning up some comments and will post the 0.9.5 sources within a day or 2.

I haven't seen a way in FM to designate a separate source package, and MOST people will NOT want the sources anyway (unless you program in Pascal with Lazarus.)

    Thanks for the feedback!
    Tony

[»] New release 0.9.1
by Tony Maro - Oct 6th 2002 01:25:03

Version 0.9.1 adds scheduled bill pay (and deposits) plus balance forecasting and a balance forecast graph. I also fixed some other minor bugs (and probably added a few more ;-)

[»] Site has been updated with version 0.9.0a
by Tony Maro - Sep 26th 2002 09:54:19

I've updated my site with version 0.9.0a which is a bugfix for older Linux distributions. If CheckBook Tracker died immediately upon launch, grab the latest version and it should function.

by LPA - Sep 21st 2002 19:25:10

Do you have future features list someplace ? I am curious as to what you have planned and how they are prioritized.

Thanks,

Yes, check the website at http://tony.maro.net/ but they include in order of priority:
    Bill scheduling
Balance forecast graph based on bill scheduling
    Full featured category management
Online banking QIF imports (matching transactions)
    Multiple account management

All of the above has been designed into the project, but not implemented in the UI yet.
