[»] iTunes for Linux/BSD
by Melvin - Apr 6th 2007 12:59:09

iTunes is a great multimedia application available for Windows and Mac OS X, but I've been expecting a port to Linux/BSD for a long time now (4 years I think) without even having news about it. There was a disscusion on this very same page about Mac OS X being (or not) Unix and whether or not this app should be on Freshmeat... I won't comment on that but...

I just try another search this morning and I just cannot believe there is still no iTunes for Linux/BSD at this point, considering Apple has commited to the Open Source community, iTunes is already available for Windows and its strongest is in fact with multimedia.

yes, i know it's freebsd based, but it's not *nix. OSx is still a closed OS, and all their apps are proprietary, secretive things they don't bother making available to the community.

apple is a classic example of a company that takes from the spirited open-source community and gives nothing back.

posting their apps in freshmeat just pollutes the database for real unix users.

i say, until apple gives a little something back in the way of apps or interfaces, leave them off freshmeat. let the little apple people go to one of the little mac sites for their little mac apps.

Err, what about the KHTML stuff they've given back to the KHTML projects (from Safari)? What about the Darwin project? Please, get informed of the facts before making blatantly wrong comments - it just makes you look like a whinger.

freshmeat isn't just about open source apps; you'll find a large number of proprietary apps here too. It's about Unix apps, and OS X is a Unix, whether you like it or not.
Apple is a company that has made Unix work as a desktop OS, unlike the dozens of other companies that tried and have so far failed. The fact that they give stuff back is a bonus really; and that they give out a lot of their software for free with the OS is just cool (how many times do you see MS giving away high quality calendaring/movie editing/etc. programs for free?).

In your terms we should definitely see Apple's apps on freshmeat; as they certainly do give back to the community. At any rate, you seem to have the whole idea of freshmeat wrong - check the FAQ and you'll see it's not just about "Free Software" - it's about real world solutions and stuff that works, not an ideology.

P.S. I'm not an employee of Apple or have anything to do with them except for owning a powerbook, just to do the disclaimer thing.

hopefully Apple can be a bit more helpful to the open source community in the future

[»] Reason for low rating
by dokhebi - May 9th 2003 15:42:12

I will be blunt about this: iTunes is only available for Mac OS X, so for the other 98% of home comuter users (Windows, Linux, older Macs, etc) we are left out in the cold. Make a platform independant version and I will consider giving it a higher rating...

It supports ogg with a plugin. I would give you a link to it, but I
        forgot where it is.
