When will version 1.2.3 be released ?!

Looking at the "PRE" version of 1.2.3 [
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v1.2/testing/ ] anyone will notice that the
development has STOPPED !
The "last" pre 1.2.3 was released on Nov, 06, 2001, and it has
been OVER TWO MONTHS ALREADY without any development.
Is 1.2.3 officially DEAD ?!
Can the GIMP people give some explaination, please?

What can I reply to such nonsense and FUD? Sometimes it just takes a little
longer to get things right. GIMP-1.2.3 has been released in the meantime
and development goes on.

Lots of functionality but not very user friendly

One glaring problem with the GIMP is the hoops one has to jump through just
to cut an image off of its background. In any other graphic tool (such as
SuperPaint), one can use the lasso to select an image against a plain
background (white for instance). In GIMP, all the lasso does is select an
irregularly shaped area and you still cut into the background. Sure, you
can use layers if you're creating a new image, but otherwise, it's bad news
if you're trying to edit an imported image. The magic wand, which is
supposed to select certain colored areas, is a joke. It is utterly
cumbersome when trying to select a multicolored image off its
background
Even if I selected a portion of a picture with some white background,
there is no option for a transparent paste. Again, in SuperPaint, you can
select an area, but paste transparently so only the colors paste and not
the white background of your selection. This is important, because it
makes no sense to be cutting into the background of a single layer image
only to repaste parts of the unwanted background all over the image. GIMP
just cannot leave the background behind on a single layer image all that
easily.
Even these problems would have been tolerable if GIMP had some clear way
of doing a fill with NO COLOR (transparent). That way, one could kill the
background on a single-layer image easily, and cut the parts out without
any headaches. But I haven't found a way to do that in GIMP yet. I don't
think I will without having to jump through multiple steps and
hoops.
Quite frankly, I think these problems are a hugh sink-hole in the
functionality of an otherwise impressive open-source program.

Seems easy enough to me. Import image w/ white background. Do color
range select, with a very narrow range, to select the white background. So
far, we're at a couple of mouse clicks. But we still need to get rid of
the spurrious selections of white inside our image. So, turn the selection
so-far into a layer. Now, do a rough lasso selection of your image, and do
a subtract-selection (whatever combo of shift-alt-ctrl that is, I forget).
And presto -- you've got your white background nicely isolated.

Indeed, I do not know what the problem is. With the Gimp, stuff like this
is trivial. I suppose you just haven't found the right functions yet.

here's my way of cutting out areas to transparency
as mentioned earlier you can do a selection by color. once you have done
this, you can kill this selected area to become transparent by pressing
CTRL-k.
But unfortunately it only works if the layer isn't the background-layer.
so duplicate the layer and delete the old background-layer and all should
work

1.1.22 lockup

Hi, I had the same problem until I deleted my old GTK+/GLIB libraries (it
mentions this in one of the README's). Once I got only the GTK+/GLIB-1.2.7
libraries installed, I re-compiled the GIMP and it works much better now. I
also deleted the GIMP directories like ~/.gimp-1.1 and
/usr/local/share/gimp (after backing up anything I wanted to keep) before I
re-compiled.
Some of my older plugins also had to be re-compiled to work with the new
GIMP. Hope this helps.

Coming to Freshmeat, I see that GIMP-1.1.5 is out, so I download it.
Looking forward to using it, and seeing what new and cool features you guys
have to offer.. I was really sad to see that it crashes on start up of any
scrupt fu application. I will make note that I am glad to see a new
interface to the fonts. I was impressed with that.

(i am currently unable to d/l the latest release to try it out for myslef,
