Section: Unix

Added: Wed, Apr 15th 1998 22:36 UTC (10 years, 7 months ago) Updated: Mon, Mar 17th 2008 12:42 UTC (8 months, 21 days ago)

Screenshot About:
AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.

Release focus: Major feature enhancements

Changes:
This release has better support for Xinerama and non-Xinerama multihead systems, including better window placement for Xinerama as well as separate Feel, Look, Background, and Init/Restart functions for different screens in non-Xinerama multihead mode. Compile problems with Solaris and old compilers have been fixed.

by COLIN Stéphane - Aug 18th 2004 12:29:14

AfterStep was the 1st wm i have used, after that, testing of others take me only 2-3 hours before reverting to AS :-)

Many thanks Sasha and keep the good work ...

It was the last I tried on Linux, but the one I remember having the best experience with.

Yknow, I used to be a DIEHARD AfterStep user.. its lightweight, modular design, along with pleasing visual capability and intuitive functionality was wonderful.. it seems to have fallen a bit from the days I used it.. development seems to have slowed down from where it used to be, which is a shame.. ::shrug::

i use E-DR16 now, and theres basically no going back from that =)

Far from it. AfterStep development is as strong as ever, with quite a lot of cvs activity every day.

There was a large period of time (just over a year) during which the 2.x series was being developed outside of the stable 1.8 series... which some people misinterpreted as "slow development" or project abandonment. I'll refrain from commenting on which direction E17 is from E16. :D
Regardless... progress has not slowed. Quite the opposite. Enjoy.
