Flux!

Recently switched over to this WM and have found it to be quite nice. I can
definately say that I've been impressed with it so far. Keep up the great

Simply the best

I've been using fluxbox for 3.5 of the 4 years that I've been free of
Windows. I am continually searching for the best window manager, and I am
continually returning to flux. Thanks for an excellent piece of software,
and keep up the good work.

nice, but flaky

I used Fluxbox for about 6 months, and liked it in many ways. The tabbed
windows were a great way to organize things, and I liked the way it
conserved screen space. Coming from KDE, it was nice to have a window
manager that wasn't in my face all the time.
BUT...
I've switched to fvwm2 now, because there were just too many bugs in
Fluxbox 0.1.14. I tried posting on the Fluxbox forum, and also used the bug
reporting page, but never got any response. It seems a little strange to me
that the version number is 0.1.x, and yet it's listed here on Freshmeat as
production/stable. My experience has been that the 0.1.x is accurate, and
it's not at all production quality. Maybe in a couple of years I'll try it
again, and see if it's more solid. I do miss the features I'd grown to know
and love, but I just can't spend all my time working around bugs.

D'oh! I'm a moron. Everybody please ignore the negative part of the above
post, and just read the positive part. Of the two really horrible bugs that
were driving me crazy, I eventually realized that one was a hardware
problem with my mouse (sticky right button), and one was a problem with my
terminal emulator (aterm), not with fluxbox.
Fluxbox rocks. I'm back to using it, and am not exeperiencing any
problems.

Very nice Wm.
it would be nicer if there could be a way to remember window
groups:
1) between restarts of fluxbox.
2) an option to iconify/restore a group

another "problem":
once you got used to fluxbox, and to working
with tabbed windows - you can't go back to any other WM.
No other WM is as convenient as fluxbox... :)

well, i have surely checked out this link before posting the message.
there are several problems in fluxbox autogrouping method:
1) use only 1st part of WM_CLASS which is not always app specific (could
be something like "file" or "toolbox" etc...)
2) you can't iconify/deiconify a group
3) between restarts of fluxbox all autogroups are lost, except the
ones in the 1st workspace
i hope this clarifies my message...

Just adding another points i forgot, when autogrouping, you
can't tell fluxbox not to apply the grouping on transient windows
and popups.
for example - try autogrouping on mozilla, and try working that
way for a few days.....
the class "mozilla-bin" applies for the navigator, the mailer and even to
the "Find" dialog....
So here is the conclusion - the autogrouping should be better.

Fluxbox is a fine window manager - it takes BB a step further - BUT there
is at least one app on my machine which it won''t run. The graphical
version of links (using any of the available drivers on my machine) is
dead. It runs fine in IceWm and in XFCE.

Just what I was looking for!

I have many servers that I often VNC into, and using Gnome and KDE for the
gui environment was never an option due to their heavy graphics. I
survived on WindowMaker for quite some time but I was not too fond of the
icons that took up desktop real estate. BUt I loved its
configurability...I finally found Fluxbox, it satisfied all my needs. Its
very simple, fast and highly configurable. The best BEST thing about this
is tabs. I hate having multiple mozilla windows, or xterm windows floating
around and I didn't want to install gnome or kde just to be able to use
gnome-multiterm or konsole. Now I can tab just about anything...I highly
recommend this GUI if you have to use gui and don't want the gui to take up
precious harddrive space and chow down your bandwidth (when remotely
activated). Perfect for old video cards ...with small harddrives and
barely any vid. mem.

Haha...I only leave ion for fluxbox when I want a little bloat ;-)
Funny how different standards work. It's a great windowmanager though.

Hi,
Ion might have been useful if it could deal well with popups and
transient windows.
I think that PWM was much better than Ion.....:(

Really a practical desktop

Using linux now for 2 years as my everyday desktop i tried many different
environments. I knew blackbox but never really got used to it. What i
always loved were tabwindows. Fluxbox combines the sleak and appealing
interface of the blackbox desktop with (optional) tabbed windows what makes
it really great. You just NEVER run out of space again. Whats more it
really runs stable, i used it now for half a year and i wouldn´t
blame it for any X-Crashes i had meanwhile. It was easy to install on my
Slackbox and the themes are clearly beautiful. I can really recommend this
to any user who seeks a fast and reliable desktop or just hasn´t a
ram loaded machine.

This is _very_ nice ;-)
Fast, small, simple to use. Hasn't crashed on me so far either after
about a week of using it on two or three different machines and
distros.
I'd forgotton how pleasant it was to use a simple, straight to the point
windowmanager after using KDE for the past year... ;-)

Installation was a breeze. Fluxbox was happy to accept my Blackbox config
files. The keyboard support is absolutely brilliant. You can bind keys to
do everything from change desktops to shade windows to run commands (I
hardly ever touch my mouse anymore). I do, however, prefer the wheel-mouse
support in blackbox (using the appropriate patch).
Still, I give fluxbox a well deserved 9/10 (10/10 once wheel mice support
is more little more like blackbox's). Highly recommended to any blackbox
fan.

Very nice. I missed keybindings in blackbox and bbkeys was not actually
what I wanted. Also, the console-like workspace changing rules. Iconizing
stuff is pretty useful as well. Never used the tabs tho, but you can always
disable them. Good work!

Problems with resizing

I enjoy fluxbox too for its fast startup, easy menuconfiguration, and the
missing of unused features.
But I sometimes have problems when resizing a window from the lower right
corner
The window moves and resizes in an uncontrollable way, getting
taller and taller - mainly when nearly maximized in the beginning, and most
often it is mozilla which is behaving like that.
